Volver - 9/10

Brilliant, absolutely wonderful. I know that I'm late but I loved it. The noiry acting in the first half, the Almodovar obsession with relationships between women (and their bodies, natch). Just brilliant.

If you've seen All About My Mother would you mind answering a few questions for me?

I think I rated the Apu trilogy on the other board. Well they're all 10s anyway.

Rocco and his Brothers; 9/10. Visconti's epic about family, loyalty and the forces of economics is the balance between his neo-realist past and melodrama future, with the love two brothers have for a prostitute threatening to tear the family apart as they cope with a harsh economic climate in Meelan.

Chinese Roulette: 7.5/10. Minor Fassbinder, but typically scabrous attack on bourgeois conventions, especially marriage. A husband and his lover visit their country retreat, and so does the wife and her lover - all set up by their crippled daughter. Cue embarrassment but good natured relations until the daughter wants to play games.

It's not as good second time round. I'm being churlish, yeah good film. 9 is a bit OTT like.

I bought The Long Good Friday for about a pound in Woolworths. It's one of those films I'd always meant to watch but somehow never got round to doing so. Biggest let down ever. 2/10.

The script is just appalling, like something out of Eastenders or one of those porn films with acting.

I'm doing a research project on it: "What is the audiences response to Almodovar's exploration of gender in All About My Mother".

The fuckfaces on IMBD have given me nothing!

Just talk about "women's pictures" or something, you know 50s Hollywood melodramas. Almodovar's incredibly influenced by the films of Sirk etc.

I know Volver refers to Mildred Pierce. I don't know if AAMM has a natural comparison in that respect; you have the Streetcar references I suppose.

The Orphanage - 8/10. consistantly tense, very creepy at times, guinely pretty scary. emtionally very draining, but in a positive way if that makes any sense.
